Wooden Bath Mat Solution

The Options:
wooden bath mat options copy

Ikea PLATTA
Target Teak Shower Mat
Atlantica Square Teak Wood Shower Mat

My Solution:
CIMG3977

2 Ikea PLATTA deck pieces put together achieves the look of the far more expensive options for only $14.00. So far I have had this for 2 months and its working out really well. Eventually I may change them out as the wood begins to fade. I had the Target option on my shopping list but when I saw the Ikea decking I knew I could work with it. I have thought of doing 3 on the wall to set a spa-like mood.

I even considered using 6 with two rows of 3 to make a smart masculine headboard.

I have been lurking here for a bit, but have not commented. However, I could not resist asking a question. Why do you prefer the wooden bath mats to the towel-like versions?
thanks!

I am going for a spa-like feel in my bathroom. All white towels, white hotel shower curtain and teak wood accessories. Thats why the wood mat works for me. I do, however, like it over a fabric mat because you dont get that yucky soaked feeling when you step on it like when you step on to a terry cloth bath mat. I also love how masculine it is compared to most bathroom accessories. I hope this makes sense.

That makes sense, but how do you keep the wood from getting moldy? I do not understand where the water goes when you step on the wood-- does it collect in the bottom? How does the wood breathe?

That looks REALLY cool. How did you join them together?

"Bonjour" from Paris (France).
I've had similar 60x120 cm Ikea "decking" on my balcony for the last 23 years (had to calculate, but it's really that - 23 years !).
It's out there when it drizzles & sizzles & all through the winter, when it can sure drizzle a lot and even snow & freeze.
I put 2 coats of "lasure" on both sides when I put it down, and did a repeat (1 coat, both sides) a few (5-6 ?) years ago.
It gets washed down in spring but very rarely after that, and no other special treatment.
After 23 years, it's impeccable.
What you've set up looks great and I certainly wouldn't suggest pitching it out because it's "fading".
Maybe sand it down a bit (to equalize the colour) and just put on a coat of "lasure" (don't know how to say this in English - it is NOT varnish), and enjoy !
In case you're interested: the very weird name for these things in French is "caillebotis".
Salut !

Ikea's platta: It states on the products info that wood contains tannic acid which, after a time, can leak out and discolor the sub-floor. So it may discolor grouting or leak into any cracks in your tile. Was a good idea, but not a good idea for indoor use.

Yeah, this is totally going to stain your floor - or your feet. A better project would be to use some teak wood from another Ikea piece. Or just buy the real thing.
